Ikigai HeadSpa
boutique luxury spa
Project Location - Grand Rapids, Michigan
Ikigai HeadSpa is an intimate wellness space designed to separate clients from the pace and brightness of everyday life, guiding them into a calm, meditative state. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of ikigai, one’s sense of purpose and balance, the design intentionally embraces a dark, moody atmosphere to quiet the mind and create a consistently soothing environment at any time of day. Walls, ceilings, and trim are fully color-drenched in a deep olive green, enveloping guests in a cocoon-like setting that feels grounding and restorative.
The front of the spa introduces a moment of transition, featuring Japanese foot baths and a welcoming window display with a fountain, greenery, and sculptural elements that establish a connection to nature. The treatment room, the darkest space within the spa, serves as a sanctuary for rest and renewal, housing a Japanese head spa bed, facial bed, open product shelving, and a vanity finished with a light zellige backsplash for subtle contrast and texture.
The bathroom extends the experience beyond treatment, transforming routine moments into ritual. Floor-to-ceiling bamboo motif wallpaper creates an immersive backdrop, complemented by a thoughtful changing area with robe hooks, a jewelry stool, and a wood leaning mirror. A gold waterfall faucet and an asymmetrical mirror with warm backlit lighting add sensory softness, allowing the spa experience to begin long before the treatment itself.
